Giacomo Manzoni's Parole da Beckett. / Suvini-Hand, Vivienne.

In: Italian Studies, Vol. L, 1995, p. 97-111.

The contemporary composer, Giacomo Manzoni, was born in Milan in 1932 and currently resides there. His formal musical education began at the age of sixteen when he became a student of composition in Messina, and later at the Conservatory of Milan. At the age of twenty-three he gained a degree in foreign languages and literature from the Bocconi University of Milan, and then started a career as an orchestral player and choral director. As well as teaching harmony, counterpoint, and composition at the Conservatoires of Milan and Bologna, he has travelled extensively throughout Europe giving musical seminars and courses, is a member of several editorial boards, and has worked as music critic for the newspaper, L'Unità, from 1958–66.

This article provides an in-depth analysis of Manzoni's avant-garde work: a musical setting of extracts from Samuel Beckett's compositions.
